Just nearby, Pliny the Younger built his villa in Tuscis, which is identified with walls, mosaic floors and marble fragments surviving at a place now called Colle Plinio, the "Hill of Pliny".

In 550, Tifernum was largely destroyed during the Ostrogothic campaign by Fantalogus, at the orders ofTotila. The town was subsequently rebuilt by its bishop, Floridus, around a castle, and renamed first Castrum Felicitatis and later Civitas Castelli. By the Donation of Pepin of the Frankish king Pepin the Short in 752, it went to the Holy See, though in practice it was disputed between the papacy, Perugia and Florence. It was ruled by the Vitelli family, even after Cesare Borgia attached the city more directly to the Holy See.

In subsequent centuries, it had various rulers, among them Pier Saccone Tarlati di Pietramala, brother of Guido, Bishop of Arezzo. Pier Saccone sold it in 1322 to Guido Alberto de' Guidi di Modigliana. In the later Middle Ages it was governed successively by the Guelphs and Ghibellines. In 1375, Città di Castello joined the insurrection of other cities of the States of the Church. Cardinal Robert of Geneva (later antipope as Clement VII), tried to capture it using Breton mercenaries, but was repulsed. Under Pope Martin V in 1420, it was taken by the condottiero Braccio da Montone. Later Niccolò Vitelli, aided by Florence and Milan, became absolute ruler or tiranno. Antonio da Sangallo the Younger built an extensive palace for the Vitelli family.

In 1474, Sixtus IV sent his nephew, Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere (later Julius II); after fruitless negotiations he laid siege to the city, but Vitelli did not surrender until he learned that the command of the army had been given to Duke Federico III da Montefeltro. The following year Vitelli tried unsuccesefully to recapture the city; fear of Cesare Borgia induced him to desist, since Cesare Borgia had his father strangled and Città di Castello added to the papal possessions.

Towards the end of the twentieth century, the city has seen a considerable expansion northwards toward San Giustino, with industrial parks tracking the river, railroad and main highway: the area produces farm machinery, textiles, ceramics and furnishings.

For the most part still surrounded by town walls dating back to the 16th century, the town of Città di Castello spreads out along the Tiber valley, on the spot where the Romans had founded the township of Tifernum Tiberinum.
After having been sacked and destroyed on the orders of Totila during the barbarian invasions, it was rebuilt under Bishop Florido and first took the name of Castrum Felicitatis and later, in the 10th century, that of Castrum Castelli.
It became a Comune during the late Middle Ages and was subjected to the rule of Perugia, to that of the Church and then to that of Florence; only in the 16th century, under Cesare Borgia, it definitely became dominion of the Papal State. Buildings which used to be the seat of administrative structures such as the Palace of the Podestà, with its baroque facade dating back to 1686, and the Town Hall, built in the Gothic style with an elegant portal and windows with two lights, testify to the ancient history of this Umbrian town. Traces of Gothic art are still to be found of the left-hand side of the Cathedral, which, having been constructed during the 11th century on the site of a Roman temple, was already radically modified in the middle of the 14th century. The churches of St.Dominic (1424), with its incomplete facade and ogival portal on the left-hand side, of St.Mary Maggiore, dating back to the Gothic era but adorned by a Renaissance facade, and finally that of St.Francis with its poligonal apses (1273), remodelled in the first years of the 18th century, complete the panorama of the town's religious buildings. The Municipal Pinacoteque contains works of art by Raffaello, Signorelli and Domenico Ghirlandaio, apart from others by Umbrian, Tuscan and Marche schools.
Peace And All Goodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05147396751452903242noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4392807709059647292.post-18989197578258934952011-04-24T13:07:00.000-07:002011-05-08T13:53:51.021-07:00Cerbaiolo

The Tiber Valley houses and offers to visitors the places that were mostly dear to the saint, places where he spent nights during his wanderings, places where he helped people or founded hermitages. These places are easily reached by car, but once you're there, you're plunged into a deep mystical atmosphere, where silence is a natural condition and the desire for meditation is palpable. READ MORE

The place was donated to Saint Francis in 1212. Today you can still see that bed hat he made by placing a few leafy boughs over a rock. Montecasale is known for an episode of the saint's life that took place when he met two thieves, whose skulls are still visible in the hermitage. The last time Saint Francis was here was in 1224. The hermitage of Montecasale also welcomed Saint Anthony and Saint Bonaventura di Bagnoregio.
29 Settembre

Notte …..e cena in campagna! (ci portano in pulmino)

1 Ottobre

5 Ottobre

7 Ottobre
Notte in Convento e cena finale sempre lì.

8 Ottobre

Breve riposo
The road from Michelangelo Caprese, where Michelangelo Buonarroti was born in 1475, winds up the wooded slopes of Mt. Sovaggio on the way to Mt. Penna, given to Francis by Count Orlando of Chuisi in 1213. Francis had a camp at la Penna in an area of strange rock formations in the forest known as La Verna, now a series of buildings from different eras that make up a sanctuary. It was here that Francis received the stigmata in 1224. A walk through the forest leading to the summit of Monte Penna gives you a wide panorama view of the Tiber and the Arno valleys.

Francis at La Verna

The first Franciscan friars liked to go to fairs and other celebrations looking for a chance at these gatherings to speak to people about God. They knew that there was a lot of ignorance about God’s true nature as a loving Father; about Jesus’ desire to share himself with us. Many people would listen to false teaching. Francis wanted to share with people his belief in God’s love.

Mount La Verna - Aerial View

One time when Francis was on a journey with his usual companion, Brother Leo, he heard that a great banquet was in progress at a nearby castle to celebrate the knighthood of a family member. Now Francis liked to go to these occasions for he saw such an assembly as a chance to speak to the crowd about God. “Let us go to the merrymaking up there for, with God’s help, we shall gather some spiritual fruit”, he said. Now among the noblemen who had come to the feast was Count Orlando. He listened with great interest to Francis, then asked if he could have a private word. Count Orlando had this to say: “In Tuscany I possess a mountain that is most favourable to things of the spirit. It is called Mount of La Verna, and is very secluded and wild and well situated for one who wishes to do penance in a remote place. I will gladly present it to you and your companions for the salvation of my soul.”

When Francis heard this generous offer he was filled with joy for it was something that he had wanted for a long time. Orlando arranged with him for some brothers to go to the mountain to see if it would be suitable for prayer and solitude. He sent fifty soldiers to accompany the brothers because they would have to pass through a dangerous forest inhabited by bandits and wild beasts.

They arrived at the mountain and soon found a place suitable for a dwelling. They built some little huts and collected stones for a small chapel. Then they took possession of the mountain in the name of St Francis. If you go to La Verna today (or “Mount Alvernia” as it is translated in English) you will find that the mountain is still wild and desolate with just a small area for the hermitage and the little chapels built over the years. The majestic mass of rock has its own beauty, the steep cliffs and grassy hollows ensure that the mountain still has its characteristic wildness to provide a desolate retreat.

St Francis' bed in a cave in the rocks,

But for Francis on his first journey all was new. As he drew near the foot of the mountain he rested under a tree and there the birds sang and perched on his head, some on his shoulders and arms. It was a good omen! To this day you can see the little Chapel of the Birds built on the site.

Arriving at the retreat place Francis chose a cave for his cell and a slab of rock for his bed. You can see that rock today. When we visit solitary places that Francis loved for prayer we remember his devotion to Jesus who called himself the rock where we can find refuge. When Francis entered into these fissures in the rock he loved to pray remembering the passion of Jesus, entering into the wound of the side of Jesus. Read more on Sanctuary

EVERY PILGRIM who visits Assisi must make the short walk outside the city walls and spend time at the sanctuary of San Damiano. It is one of the most important places in the Franciscan story.
The event most often repeated about this place is the encounter between Francis and the image of Christ Crucified who spoke to him and said: “Francis, go rebuild My house; as you see, it is all being destroyed.” Thomas of Celano tells the whole story:
“With his heart already completely changed—soon his body was also to be changed—he was walking one day by the church of San Damiano, which was abandoned by everyone and almost in ruins.
“Led by the Spirit he went in to pray and knelt down devoutly before the crucifix. He was shaken by unusual experiences and discovered that he was different from when he had entered.

“As soon as he had this feeling, there occurred something unheard of in previous ages: with the lips of the painting, the image of Christ crucified spoke to him. ‘Francis,’ it said, calling him by name, ‘go rebuild My house; as you see, it is all being destroyed.’
“Francis was more than a little stunned, trembling, and stuttering like a man out of his senses. He prepared himself to obey and pulled himself together to carry out the command. He felt this mysterious change in himself, but he could not describe it. So it is better for us to remain silent about it too.
“From that time on, compassion for the Crucified was impressed into his holy soul. And we honestly believe the wounds of the sacred Passion were impressed deep in his heart, though not yet on his flesh.”
—Second Life, #10, Francis of Assisi: Early Documents, Volume 2: The Founder, New City Press, p. 249
Herein begins the mystery of the cross in Francis’ life. At first he interpreted his experience in a literal manner, doing all he could to provide the means, with stones and mortar, to rebuild the physical structure of San Damiano, which actually was in ruins.
Although this may have been part of the intent of the revelation, Francis quickly realized that the rebuilding process had to include the transformation of his heart, his inner self. He would have to rebuild his inner self, and in doing so, discover his true identity. A simultaneous vocation unfolded: rebuilding the place and rebuilding his person.

Focused on Christ
How did Francis go about rebuilding his life? The process slowly unfolded from his gazing upon the Crucified Savior over time.
What were the steps? St. Clare, a contemporary companion of Francis, described it best in her Second Letter to Agnes of Prague, when she wrote: “Gaze upon Christ, consider Christ, contemplate Christ, imitate Christ.” Those four steps would become the pathway into the discovery of a new heart, a new power and a new self.
I want to focus on just the last of these four directives: “imitate Christ.” That is the key to understanding what happened to Francis at San Damiano and the key to an effective rebuilding of one’s life.
To imitate relates to the word “image.” In our context here, it means I become the image upon whom I gaze. Francis would learn that his self-image, that is, his identity, was to become that of Christ on the cross. Both Francis and Clare must have spent countless hours contemplating this mystery. The change that would take place within Francis’ heart was imaged by what he gazed upon, and this new self would become his tool for renewing the house of God.

The Incarnation Is Key
The key to this is the Incarnation. In the Incarnation, God revealed to us who God is. The Incarnation showed us the face of God. But what does this image portray? What do we see? What Francis and Clare saw in the person of the Incarnate Christ was humility, poverty and charity. The most visible, tangible expression of this was the cross.
In the Incarnation, Francis saw that becoming human was the basis for humility. In embracing our humanness, Jesus did not cling to being God. This choice was the epitome of humility. In so choosing, Jesus could accept everything to which human nature is prone, even death. This image of Christ as seen on the cross became an essential component of Francis’ new self.
Like Jesus, humility for Francis meant not to cling to anything or appropriate any goods, titles, honors or position. It meant to be a servant to all, even inanimate creatures. It meant generosity of spirit and generosity of heart, the willingness to let all others be first. It meant obedience to all, being subject to all, just like Jesus, the Word made flesh, who did not cling to honor, status or power.
In recognizing his true self in this image, Francis embraced the essence of his being and the realization that he needed nothing else to give him worth.
The poverty Francis saw in the Crucified was the poverty of being a human creature. Although Jesus was God, he did not cling to this status. He didn’t hold on to it. In letting go of divinity, Jesus accepted the status of a human creature, being dependent, powerless, helpless and empty on his own.
This is the essence of poverty. Some call it poverty of being or ontological poverty. This true picture of humanity, modeled in the Incarnation, enabled St. Paul to write that Jesus, “though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness” (Philippians 2:6-7).
Jesus, as God, chose to become human, or poor, in order to reveal God’s self, which is love, and teach us our true identity. Again, this poverty of God was most visible by the fact of God’s Son on the cross. Here Jesus embraced powerlessness, emptiness and utter helplessness and opened himself to complete abandonment and trust in his Father. These were, and are, essential components of the human makeup.

All-embracing Love
The other element that the image of Christ on the cross portrayed was that of charity, compassionate love. Jesus’ outstretched arms drew in all humanity, welcoming every creature into the embrace of God’s tender love through mercy, forgiveness and acceptance of all. This meant recognizing and accepting the worth and dignity of each one.
As we internalize the same, we are slowly transformed into the image of Jesus, which is the image of our true self.
The path into this discovery of self is the cross. The cross is a mirror. In seeing myself in that mirror, I see Christ Crucified, and in seeing Christ Crucified, I see my most authentic self. As I am transformed into that image, I become the person God has always intended me to be.
The distinguishing marks that identify me are the same I see in Jesus: poverty, humility and charity, which are identifying marks of the face of God. Paul’s words in Galatians 2:20 are then very fitting: “It is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me.” Then I am my true and genuine self.
This reflection is difficult to describe and I’m sure equally difficult to understand or accept. Yet it lies at the heart of Francis’ spirituality and mission. It also ties in most intimately with his experience before the San Damiano Crucifix and the invitation to rebuild the Church. It was a transformed heart, a transformed self, into the image of Christ that became the tools by which society, the Church and all life could be rebuilt.
As we embrace this process, we take a major step towards discovering who we are as a disciple of Christ; we are also well on the way to rebuilding our inner life and ultimately rebuilding the house of God.

God's Project
How can we make this real and concrete? It seems to me we must come to a moment in life where, like Francis, we say: “This is what I want and desire with all my heart.” Once that is clear, then the rhythm of daily prayer is essential. We need to beg God for the kind of transformation of heart needed to have a dwelling place for humility and poverty and charity. We cannot achieve this on our own power. It is God’s project, God’s work, and only grace can make it happen.
The other arena is that of relationships, whether among friends, in the family, community life or one’s workplace. It is here that humility, poverty and compassionate charity are brought to life and nowhere else. Francis’ biographers point out that, when people met up with Francis or heard him preach, it was not simply a question of listening to words of peace and joy. Nor were people merely persuaded to reflect upon reasons for forgiving each other, doing penance or thanking and praising God.
Rather, they were confronted with these realities in the person of Francis. They were in the living presence of forgiveness, peace, faith and love, because Francis had integrated these values into his person by taking on the image of Christ on the cross.
Francis became conformed to the Crucified to such a degree that at the end of his life he appeared like the Crucified with the wounds of Christ engraved into his flesh. This would complete what began at San Damiano when “the wounds of the sacred Passion were impressed deep in his heart, though not yet on his flesh.”Francis sought repeatedly for ways to encourage the brothers to give birth to these essentials, to strive for purity of heart, and thus give birth to Christ in their own lives. This is the transformation that must go hand in hand with all other endeavors in proclaiming the Kingdom of God. This is the inner rebuilding that gives life and spirit to any outward effort.
The image of Christ in Francis was very real, as we read in Celano:

“The brothers who
lived with him know
that daily, constantly, talk of Jesus
was always on his lips,
sweet and pleasant conversations
about Him,
kind words full of love.
Out of the fullness of his heart
his mouth spoke.
So the spring of radiant love
that filled his heart within
gushed forth.
He was always with Jesus:
Jesus in his heart,
Jesus in his mouth,
Jesus in his ears,
Jesus in his eyes,
Jesus in his hands,
he bore Jesus always
in his whole body....
With amazing love he bore
in his heart and always held onto Christ Jesus and Him crucified.”

Let the Crucifix Speak to You
A pilgrimage to Assisi would be incomplete without time at the sanctuary of San Damiano. This place is most quiet and suitable for prayer in the early morning before 10 or in the early evening. Sit before the crucifix, listen to your heart and hear Jesus say: “Jim, Joanne, David, Beth, Jerry, Bob, Susie, Carol, go rebuild my house; as you see, it is all being destroyed.”
Or visit the Basilica of St. Clare within the walls of Assisi. The original crucifix of San Damiano is housed therein. It is unmistakably a place of prayer where the windows of one’s heart may open to hear the voice of God.
In the cross, the pilgrim discovers his or her true identity and finds the rebuilding tools needed to renew the house of God.
Whether you have been on pilgrimage to Assisi, birthplace of Sts. Francis and Clare, or simply want to know more about these saints and their world, you probably suspect that they can help you live more fully as a Christian, right here and right now.
Assisi Pilgrimage: Walking in Faith With Francis and Clare, a new Franciscan Communications DVD from Father Greg Friedman, O.F.M., makes that pilgrimage experience tangible. This two-hour program allows viewers to hear the stories of pilgrims who have visited Assisi and the most important places connected to these extraordinary saints.
In addition, Franciscan Pilgrimage guides—including author and poet Murray Bodo, O.F.M., Clare scholar Margaret Carney, O.S.F., and Roch Niemier, O.F.M., author of the accompanying article and a book about pilgrimages to Assisi—tell the stories of key places and events in the lives of Francis and Clare.
Music by Franciscan composer Robert Hutmacher adds a medieval flavor. Special features include interactive maps, timelines, a detailed explanation of the symbolism in the Cross of San Damiano and a pilgrims’ dramatization of Clare’s departure from wealth.
A pilgrimage helps the person making it to get in touch with the deepest strains—including God’s grace—in his or her life. By breaking our routines, by stopping to walk in the footsteps of holy people, we pray and reflect on our own holiness. That, as Assisi Pilgrimage demonstrates, can happen near or far.
In her book Francis and the San Damiano Cross: Meditations on Spiritual Transformation, Susan Saint Sing, a former resident of Assisi and an active follower of Francis, takes readers to the chapel where Francis prayed before that cross. She recounts the spiritual and physical transformation of Francis as he began to “rebuild” the church—first that run-down chapel and later the larger Church.
The transforming message of this cross “speaks to us still, beckoning us to repair our lives, our relationships, our failings—in honor of Him who gave his life there on the cross in order for us to become more in the fullness of his presence, to be instruments of peace.”
In the Footsteps of Francis and Clare, by Roch Niemier, O.F.M., veteran pilgrim guide, explores the “spirituality of place” and takes readers through the streets of Assisi, to nearby San Damiano, Maddalena and the Portiuncula, and also to Greccio (where Francis celebrated Christmas) and to La Verna (where he received the marks of Christ’s wounds).
From the very early days of the Church, there were both cenobites and hermits among the various groups of religious. The cenobites lived as monks in community life. The hermits lived in retirement to pray and meditate alone. So too, from the early days of the Franciscan Order, there were small hermitages where the Brothers could retire to give themselves more completely to a life of prayer and meditation.
Francis himself always felt drawn to remote places. Even as a young man, he liked to go with an unnamed companion to a grotto or cave near Assisi where they could talk undisturbed and where St Francis could pour out his heart to God. After he renounced the world at the court of the Bishop of Assisi, he spent the next several years living as a hermit and wearing the garment of a hermit.

When Francis and his eleven companions returned to the Spoleto Valley from Rome after their Rule had been approved in 1209, they first discussed among themselves whether they should live strictly as hermits or live a mixed life of prayer and preaching the Gospel. But even while they chose the mixed life of prayer and apostolate, Francis still wanted a number of places of retirement, called hermitages, where some at least of the friars could lead a life of seclusion and to which others could retire at least occasionally.
Thomas of Celano makes mention of such places a number of times, sometimes without giving their location, at other times speaking more precisely of the hermitages of St Urban, Sarteano, Rieti, Poggio Bustone, Greccio, La Verna and one even in Spain.

The Quest for Solitude
There are two sides to seeking solitude. There are those who are running away from something; and there are those who are running after something. The first are those who seek solitude as a relief from their frenetic and busy lifestyles in the city with its crowds, noise, the stress of the workplace and hectic social life. They seek times and places of solitude for rest and renewal. For them solitude is an end in itself. Then there are those who seek solitude because they are running after something. Monks, nuns and hermits seek solitude in order to find someone.

My soul is athirst for God, athirst for the living God. (Psalm 42:2)
Dry as a thirsty land, I reach out to you. (Psalm 143:6)

We all know that, for concentration upon a given matter, a certain detachment from competing interests is necessary, both externally and internally. So solitude provides that environment for this to happen in our desire for a more intimate relationship with God.
Sometimes, when we approach a person and wish to speak with them personally, we will ask them "Are you busy?" or we will knock on the door of the office and ask "Are you alone?" meaning "Are you free and disengaged?". This is what is being sought in solitude.
The privacy of the room, to which our Lord bids us to go, and to shut the door to seek God's face in prayer has a depth beyond a warning against spiritual pride. The room, like solitude, is a necessary place of separation conducive to being attentive and focussed on Him speaking to us.
In choosing a life of prayer we seek to create an environment that aims at nothing except living in the presence of God. The contemplative life exists for its own sake and to fulfil the first and the most important commandmen4 March, 2010 God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the most important commandment said Our Lord Jesus Christ.
The great joy in the solitary life is not found simply in quiet in the beauty and peace of nature, or in the song of birds, or even in the peace of one’s own heart. It resides in the awakening and the attuning of the inmost heart to the voice of God - to the inexplicable, quiet, definite inner certitude of one’s call to obey Him, to hear Him, to love Him, and worship Him here, now, today, in silence and alone. It is the realisation that this is the whole reason for one’s existence. (Thomas Merton)
In not engaging in pastoral work, preaching and other apostolic activities we seek to offer a clear alternative to these in the life and witness of the church. It is ironic that, in the very giving up of seeking to change the world through these activities, places of contemplative prayer exercise a profound influence.

The Principles set out in the Rule as understood by the Little Brothers of Francis
St Francis’ Rule for hermitages is not prescriptive in the way that some Rules are for other Orders: like that of St Benedict which covers every aspect of the life for his monks from the psalms to be used in worship to the role of the Abbot. But, with its brevity, the rule for hermitages clearly sets out the principles necessary to live and organise life within a hermitage.
The following is our understanding of the principles expressed in the rule for hermitages.

Community

Size
Each hermitage is to have three or, at the most, four brothers, which means that they would be both little and fraternal.

Not more than three, or at the most four, Brothers should go together to a hermitage to lead a religious life there.

Authority
Authority resides in the group and not in a single person or leader, as understood by these words:

Two of these should act as mothers, with the other two, or the other one, as their sons.

The sons, however, may periodically assume the role of the mothers, taking turns for a time as they have mutually decided.

The Brothers who are sons are not to speak to anyone except their mother or their custos, when he chooses to visit them, with God’s blessing.

All Brothers should be involved in discussions about issues that arise. But at the end of this process, the decision is made only by those who are in Life Vows. Among them there must be a consensus or no decision is to be made.
We envisage a federation of hermitages, with three or four Brothers in each, and the Custos being elected from among the brethren who live in the various hermitages.

Worship
Liturgy of the Hours is the focus, and sets the rhythm of the daily prayer.
In order to protect this focus, those that join the Brothers should remain in whatever ecclesiastical state they are in, before and after joining.
Those who are priests are to relinquish any licence to celebrate or perform any function pertaining to their office.

Immediately after sunset they should say Compline of the day.

Prime and Terce should be said at the proper time, and after Terce the silence ends and they can speak and go to their mothers.

Ministry
The hermitages are not to be places or centres of ministry.
The life itself is a wordless sermon.

They are forbidden to allow anyone to enter the enclosure where they live.

The Brothers who are sons are not to speak to anyone except their mother or their custos, when he chooses to visit them, with God’s blessing.

Solitude
Within this framework, Brothers could withdraw for periods of solitude.

Two of these should act as mothers, with the other two, or the other one, as their sons.

The Gospels

Their first care should be to strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness. (Mtt. 6:33)
Jesus said:

So then, anyone who hears these words of mine and obeys them is like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain poured down, the rivers flooded, and the wind blew hard against that house. But it did not fall, because it was built on rock.

UP, up, up, and then up again. Hairpin turns. Switchbacks. Stunning views of the Rieti valley, with its lakes, orchards, deep brown fall fields. Then up again through high olive groves into forests of ilex, giant firs and holm oaks.
We know from the road signs with gold crosses on them that eventually, around another curve, we will come to a Franciscan sanctuary, a secluded, stone compound with an ancient church, a working friary, and signs to a Sacro Speco where Francis of Assisi, not yet a saint, retreated about 800 years ago to pray, meditate, wrestle with the devil, receive revelations from Jesus, perform miracles. Each will have centuries-old sculptures and frescoes documenting his life. And each will have a tiny stone hermitage that the saint shared with his early ''brothers,'' a stone pillow and often, a steep climb to a holy cave where Francis withdrew for absolute solitude, interrupted only by the sound of the wind.
There are four such hermitages in what has become known as the Holy Valley of Rieti, just 60 miles north of Rome, and my husband, Harvey Loomis, and I went to all of them last fall. A new 40-mile footpath linking the hermitages, the Cammino di Francesco, is opening in stages starting this month, to be completed in the spring. But we drove the pilgrimage route.
I have always been intrigued by St. Francis, the bald-pated, bird-preaching friar whose universal appeal is ecumenical. I had been to his hometown, Assisi, and marveled at the Giotto frescoes in the basilica. But the multinational tour buses circulating between Assisi and Francis' retreat on Mount Subasio, and his original tiny chapels since recreated and encased in gigantic churches to accommodate the crowds made the experience feel more like a visit to a theme park than a reflection of the simple, austere life Francis personified. We found much more of that life in the well-marked hermitages within 15 miles of the medieval walled city of Rieti.
The first, Fonte Colombo, seemed deserted when we arrived high up on Monte Rainero. The sleepy dog in the central courtyard barely raised his head when we let ourselves into the 15th-century church to admire the medieval wooden sculptures of Francis and to follow the signs down steep cobbled steps to the small and exquisite 12th-century Chapel of the Magdalene, where he often went to pray.
With its fading but still bright frescoes, one predating Francis, and Francis' seal, a red Tau cross that he supposedly etched himself on the recessed window wall, the simple little chapel spoke of the saint as Assisi could not. There were even fresh lilies on the altar, though we hadn't seen a soul.
Franciscan history was made at Fonte Colombo, so named by Francis for its natural spring and attendant doves. Below the chapel on a steep mountain path, past the tiny stone cave of the Chapel of St. Michael and a stark white cave used by Francis, we entered a long, three-foot-wide cleft between two towering rocks, marked by a rude cross of sticks.
Known as the Franciscan Mount Sinai, it was here in the white cave and this desolate stone fissure that Francis spent 40 days in the winter of 1223, praying, fasting and rewriting his original Rule to accommodate the exploding numbers of his increasingly fractious followers. Unhappily for him, not every one was eager to take his vow of absolute poverty, beg for food and go barefoot in the winter.
Even more unhappily, in the tiny cells of his hermitage back up the path, Francis underwent an unsuccessful medieval operation in 1225 for his failing eyesight: the cauterization of his temples with red hot pokers. Already in pain from the stigmata he'd received in his hands, feet and side the year before, this additional pain, despite his welcoming of ''Brother Fire,'' must have been excruciating.
Standing in the cold stone anteroom in front of the dormant fireplace, it was hard to imagine the agony of his recuperation in the adjoining cells so small that even I, at 5 feet 2 inches, had to stoop to enter.
t was with some relief that we heard cheerful voices in the courtyard. A mother had brought her children to race down to the spring and back. A young woman had brought her little son, Francesco, to visit his uncle, Simone, 24, a Franciscan novice. And a thoroughly modern friar arrived in his car, opened the gates of the friary with a remote control, and disappeared inside.
We drove on to La Foresta, a sanctuary eight miles away in a sun-drenched valley on the other side of Rieti where the weakening Francis had rested in the summer of 1225 on his way to his eye surgery at Fonte Colombo -- and reportedly performed a miracle. So many people crowded around the resident priest's guest house to see Francis that the priest's vineyards were trampled. Francis assured him that he would have a plentiful pressing from the few grapes that were left and according to legend, the priest had his best ever.
The original stone vat remains in the guest house (the Domus), whose walls were so blackened by smoke that Francis sought refuge in a nearby cave marked Grotta di San Francesco to protect his painful eyes.
There are still vineyards at La Foresta, a lovely spot in a forest of chestnut and oak trees with immaculate gardens and in the cloister, tubs spilling over with geraniums. The sanctuary has been taken over by Mondo X, a community of troubled young men founded by a Franciscan, and we found their resident leader, Daniele, putting together a colorful arrangement of carnations and daisies in the ancient church of San Fabian. With its fading 15th-century frescoes, the original slab altar and the old jumbled stone floor of the earlier church visible through protective glass, it is no wonder that young couples from Rieti often choose La Foresta for their weddings.
The first sight of Greccio, the third and largest sanctuary -- about 12 miles west of La Foresta -- is stunning. From the road below, the three- and four-story stone buildings rise straight up from the edge of a sheer cliff and seem to be holding up the mountain behind. A big parking lot and a tour bus of Italians from Campobasso signaled Greccio's significance:
It was in a cave here, in 1223, that Francis staged the first known living Christmas nativity scene, complete with ox and ass. The cave was incorporated into the Chapel of the Crèche in 1228, the year Francis was canonized, and is still adorned with vibrant, side-by-side 14th-century frescoes of the nativity in Bethlehem and Christmas in Greccio, by the school of Giotto.
Francis is everywhere at Greccio -- in the impossibly small cell where he slept; in the equally cramped, five-foot-wide stone corridor ''dormitory'' for his early followers with crosses carved in the wall, apparently to mark individual ''beds''; in another rough-rock cell outside where the bulging mountain forms a wall.
Above the nativity cave is a beautiful, tiny 13th-century chapel with blue and red stars on the vaulted ceiling, the first church to be dedicated to St. Francis after his canonization, and the original 13th-century wood dormitories built by his friars shortly after his death in 1226, with twigs visible in the hardened mud walls and pages from medieval books plugging holes in the roof.
Close to 100,000 people visit Greccio every year, including about 30,000 for the four re-enactments of the nativity scene around Christmas. Time must seem frozen as the same candle-lit procession walks up the mountain to celebrate the re-enacted living nativity as happened in Greccio eight centuries ago.
Poggio Bustone, the final sanctuary, is essentially where the Francis we know, began. It was here in 1208, on a high, wild outcropping of rock, that Francis, then 26, accepted his conversion from playboy to penitent and emerged the humble pilgrim of enduring legend. The process was not easy for him, nor, it turned out, for us.
The small parking lot was overflowing when we finally achieved the dizzying height of Poggio Bustone, the white ribbons on one car signaling that a wedding was under way in the 15th-century church. So we missed the frescoes and Francis' favorite hermitage and instead went directly to the sign for the Sacro Speco. We labored on foot up an unrelentingly steep path, pausing only to pant and admire the red cyclamen blooming wild in the forest. Along the trail, we passed several 17th-century grilled shrines, one encasing a stone imprint said to be of Francis' knees, another described as the footprint of an angel, a third the twisted image of the devil -- each giving us false hope that we had reached the Upper Shrine or the Grotto of Revelations. A rude cross marking the precipitous rock where Francis wrestled with his conscience spurred us on, as did the celebratory sounds of the wedding: the church bell, car horns and some gunshots drifting up from below.
Finally, after a half-hour climbing steep stone steps cut into the mountain, we reached a jagged, early 15th-century stone church clinging to the edge of a chalk cliff. We pealed its bell to celebrate our survival.
The church seemed locked up until, by chance, Harvey tried a tiny wooden door, and there we were in the sky-scraping chapel with an ancient fresco of St. Bernadine, fresh roses, candles, hand-made twig crosses, crucifixes draped on the little altar cross, the flower-festooned, frescoed stone grotto where Francis fought his demons -- and a guest book. Most of the messages were in Italian, some in German and French and a few in English.
''We traveled a long way from Dallas, Texas and Rockall, Texas,'' began one entry from the summer of 2001. ''We pray for peace, love and understanding.''
The way back down, down, down the mountain was easier, of course, through fields of late sunflowers and olive trees heavy with fruit. But unlike Francis, who walked on from Poggio Bustone to a legendary life of poverty, we returned to a hotel of great comfort in Rieti.

Treading in a holy valley
Rieti is an hour or so northeast of Rome on the Via Salaria (Route SS4), which follows the ancient route traveled by St. Francis.
The Rieti tourist office was quite helpful; for help in English, ask for Rita Giovannelli at (39-347) 727-9591, fax (39-0746) 205-721, or e-mail: promozione.touristica@commune.rieti.it.

Where to Stay
We stayed in one of the two four-star hotels inside the city walls of Rieti, the Hotel Miramonti on the Piazza Oberdan, (39-0746) 201-333, www.hotelmiramonti.rieti.it. It is $110 a night, at $1.25 to the euro, for one the 27 doubles.
The other four-star hotel in town, Grande Albergo Quattro Stagioni (Four Seasons) on the main Piazza Cesare Battisti, (39-0746) 271-071, fax (39-0746) 271-090, www.hotelquattrostagionirieti.it, is even more attractive, especially the 20 rooms (of 43) overlooking the countryside. It is a bargain $104 for a double.
Outside the walls is another four-star hotel, the 28-room hilltop Villa Potenziani, (39-0746) 202-765, fax (39-0746) 257-924, www.villapotenziani.it. A double is $160.
These hotels include breakfast with their rates.

What to See
We visited two Franciscan hermitages a day, though it is possible to do them all in a day. They are open daily 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m.
They are clearly marked on the Touring Club Italiano map ''Umbria e March,'' available for $12.95 at the Hagstrom Map Store, 57 West 43rd Street in Manhattan, (212) 398-1222; or at www.mapsguidesandmore.com.
We found an excellent larger scale map of Rieti province at Our Heritage, at www.initaly.com/ads/maps.htm, for $9.25.Peace And All Goodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05147396751452903242noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4392807709059647292.post-27142859068772087852010-07-08T17:19:00.000-07:002010-08-08T19:12:27.343-07:00The Friends of Saint FrancisGo to Angela Seracchioli - Di qui passo' Francesco and click on the various figures to read in Italian. Carattere e caratteristiche:
VIENE INVIATO CON BERNARDO A SANTIAGO DI COMPOSTELLA e su quei sentieri soffrono fame, freddo e maltrattamenti.

(Leggenda perugina)
Come morì e dove fu sepolto:

La risposta di Francesco è bellissma: «…Vuoi sapere perché a me? vuoi sapere perché a me? vuoi sapere perché a me tutto ’l mondo mi venga dietro?

Peace And All Goodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05147396751452903242noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4392807709059647292.post-37728582250057490552010-07-07T12:41:00.000-07:002010-08-09T18:24:15.336-07:00Poggio Bustone
Poggio Bustone: A Spectacular View Overlooking the Sacred Valley

In the 12 th century, it was owned by the Farfa Abbey. It was later conquered by the Normans and at the end of the 12th century it became part of the territory governed by the city of Rieti.
Parts of the defensive structures that protected the town in the past centuries can still be seen today. Especially fascinating is the Porta del Buongiorno (Gate of the Good Day). Local legend narrates that Saint Francis entered this gate with his greeting of: “Good day good people”.

There are four Franciscan shrines in the Valle di Rieti – Greccio, Fonte Colombo, La Foresta and Poggio Bustone. Now we need to put on good walking boots to climb into the mountains if we are to continue our pilgrimage on to Poggio Bustone.

Even today it is remote, situated in a valley among craggy mountains … above the small village. It was to this place that Francis came in the summer of 1208 following his very public renunciation of his father who was a leading businessman in Assisi. Francis had been joined by six men from Assisi, some prominent, and they lived together as brothers near the little church of the Portiuncula in great simplicity and poverty. But they were social outcasts as people did not understand their sudden change in lifestyle. Francis needed direction: what was he to do now that he had his first followers? He left Assisi and went with his six companions to the Rieti Valley and climbed to Poggio Bustone.
High on a rocky ledge Francis found two caves close to a Benedictine Monastery, far removed from the busy routine of daily life. He prayed there alone, fasting. The cave in which Francis prayed is called the Grotto of the Revelation. Here during his prayer, Francis was assured that his sins had been forgiven, and that his brethren, the Penitents of Assisi, would grow in number.
This is a picturesque account of his arrival in the actual town of Poggio Bustone as told by Hyacinth Blocker ofm:

As (Francis) entered the village and swung down the main street, many of the people were just getting up and preparing to go to work in their hillside vineyards and terraced farms. More than likely they thought they were still dreaming when they saw this stranger in their midst, his thin, wiry body covered with a rough tunic, held together indifferently at the waist with a piece of knotted rope. We can easily picture the shutters flying open like umbrellas, heads popping out of the windows and necks craning with curiosity. We can picture doors being pulled ajar and uncombed, tousled heads peering around the corners, followed by shivering bodies in rumpled night clothes. We can see the many dark eyes dilating with wonder and hear the note of puzzlement in the buzz of excited voices. “Who’s that funny little fellow out there in the street?” they were probably saying.
Francis, with a large, disarming grin, waved his hands informally to everyone, from one side of the street to the other, and sang out cheerily, “Good morning, good people!”
The peasants of Poggio Bustone have never forgotten that first bright greeting of the poverello. Even today, over 800 years later, near the centre of the village you will find a stone slab, green now with moss and mildewed with age, commemorating the coming of Francis. In faded, dimly legible letters, it says simply:

Good morning, good people, the rousing greeting of Saint Francis when he entered Poggio Bustone in 1209. In Franciscan history, this sanctuary is remembered for the following reasons:

as the place of pardon – since here Francis sought forgiveness for the sins of his past life

as a place of revelation – because it was here that Francis received direction for the future of the Order, and

as the place of departure on the first mission of the Franciscan Order.

In recent times a small Temple of Peace has been built at Poggio Bustone and in the apse of the little church there is a statue of St Francis smiling and stepping forward. Nearby, commemorating the original focus of Franciscan Missionary activity, is the following inscription:

St Francis of Assisi departing from this mountain in the winter of 1209 called to himself his first companions and said to them:

“Go, beloved brothers,
two by two
through the diverse parts of the earth,
announcing peace to men.”
